Taking Personal Inventory

(JFT Daily Meditation)

The purpose of taking a personal inventory is to build self-awareness of ourselves. Take our actions, feelings, strengths, weaknesses, values, goals, and failures into account. It’s how we keep ourselves in check. Reflect in areas where we need to work more on. Acknowledge areas where we already have accomplished what we set out to do.

The idea of taking a personal inventory is multifaceted and very beneficial for personal growth. And it’s valuable because it helps us understand our strengths and weaknesses. It helps us understand our actions and attitudes, by helping us spot patterns in our behavior and to make changes if necessary.

It’s a way we can clarify our goals. We can track our progress and switch strategies if necessary. And it helps with improving our decision-making. We already are learning from life experiences. So, reflecting on past decisions and their outcomes can guide us in making better choices in the future.

…choices vs. informed choices.

Informed choices and regular choices lie in the amount of information and understanding involved when making decisions.

With informed choices there are facts, data, and information behind the decision-making process. With regular choices, decisions can sometimes be impulsive. Very little information is gathered and there is very little understanding of any or all the implications or consequences behind the decision.

When we take a personal inventory the process of making informed choices is a very similar process. We take our habits into account. We can either make a physical list or mental list to give ourselves a comprehensive review. Taking a closer, more holistic approach to reviewing our actions, attitudes, and relationships. Then, the idea is to integrate this practice into our daily lives and being consistent in doing this is our recovery journey.
